Valentine Chocolate Cut Out Cookies

These are my favorite cut out cookies. So easy! My mom used to make them for me on Valentine’s Day and I started making them for my college sweetheart for the holiday. Of course I also made them for my children when they were growing up. Truly easy and yummy!

1/2 cup butter/margarine

3/4 cup sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla

1 1/2 c flour

1/3 cup cocoa

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

Cream butter, sugar, egg and vanilla. Mix remaining ingredients. Add to creamed mixture and mix thoroughly. Chill dough. Rollout on lightly floured board to 1/4 inch in thickness. Cut out with cookie cutter. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 325 degrees for 5-7 minutes or until no indentation remains when touched.

Frosting

1 1/2 cups confectionary sugar

2 tbls shortening

1/2 tsp vanilla

2 Tbsp milk

1-2 drop food coloring

Sift sugar and combine all ingredients in a bowl. Beat until smooth. Divide and color and ready to decorate!
